Film Master Michael Haneke has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.

The filmmaker thus joins other great filmmakers who have obtained this award such as Pedro Almodóvar, Luis Garcia Berlanga, Woody Allen y Fernando Fernan Gomez.

Michael Haneke is currently one of the best European filmmakers and good proof of this is the recent Oscar for best foreign language film received by "Amour" or the Palm of Gold from the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 for "The White Ribbon".

Haneke is one of the most esteemed filmmakers in the Cannes film festival, where in addition to winning the Palme d'Or in 2009, he received the award for best director in 2005 for "Caché" and the Grand Jury Prize in 2001 for "La pianista".

He is also one of the filmmakers who appears the most in the European Film Awards, a contest in which he has been awarded up to three times for best director and as many for best film.

The filmmaker also has the Austrian Cross of Honor of Arts and Sciences, which was awarded in 2007 and is Commander of the Order of Sciences and Letters of France since 2010.
