Film Masters: David Lynch (early and 80s)

David Lynch

David Lynch is one of the most defined American film directors has his style. Patent remains in his films his love for him Dadaism and Surrealism, something that extends to other activities to which he is also dedicated such as photography, painting, music or furniture design.

He began in the world of cinema in the second half of the 60s. In 1966 he shot his first short film, one minute long, entitled «Six Men Getting Sick«. Making self-criticism, he himself defined it as «57 seconds of development and passion, and three seconds of vomiting«, But thanks to the success of this one, that won the Academy's annual competition in 1968 he was able to shoot "The Alphabet", his second short.

In 1970, he earned $ 5.000 from a American Film Institute award for his short film "The Grandmother." This 30-minute play already shows much of the style that Lynch will develop throughout his career.

In 1974 he made the short film "The amputee", but before this the filmmaker was already embarking on the project of his first feature film, "Erasing head". Film that would begin in 1971 and that would not end until 1977 due to lack of budget. The movie, cult work of fantasy cinema, was a great success for Lynch and his team members, many of whom would continue to work with him on upcoming films.

Eraser head

"The Elephant Man" in 1980, his second feature film, took him to the gala of the Hollywood Academy Awards. The film was nominated for eight statuettes, including the one for best director, unfortunately it did not win an Oscar. The award that he did get was for the best film at the Baftas.

In 1984, Lynch makes a foray into science fiction with the film "Dune", a film that critics destroyed and that was very bad at the box office, but that served the director to film his next film due to an agreement previously signed with producer Dino De Laurentiis.

Blue velvet

The movie he got in exchange for shooting "Dune" was "Blue Velvet." The blur in his career of the space film was well worth the success he would obtain in 1986. With "Blue Velvet" he obtained his second Oscar nomination and in the Sitges Festival won the awards for best film and best photography.

In 1988 he was shooting yet another short film, «The Cowboy and the Frenchman«.
