Walter Salles is one of the great references of current cinema and, when he talks about the seventh art, it is convenient to listen to him. Today the Brazilian director pointed out "the importance of cinema in a world in transformation, where only countries that know how to 'reinvent themselves' will be able to have a true role to play."

The director of Motorcycle Diaries sponsored Europe Day at the Cannes Film Festival and there he referred to the news of the seventh art. «Cinema is an ability to imagine another world, a possible world, because it tells you who you are and where you are going, so that, in a world in transformation, it has an even more determining role. Cinema can help a country to get to know itself and also to imagine itself, and if we do not imagine what we can achieve, we will not achieve it, ”he stressed.

The director of "Central Station of Brazil" (1998) was today the special guest at the day of debates organized by the European Commissioner for the Information and Media Society, Viviane Reding, and the president of the Cannes Film Festival, Gilles Jacob. Among others, the European Ministers of Culture of France, Belgium, Portugal, Austria, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, as well as different representatives of the French film industry were present.

The topics covered in the debates were the effects of new technologies on European cinema and the transformations that new broadcast platforms, such as the internet and mobile telephony, bring to the creation and economy of cinema, among others.

Likewise, the response provided by Europe to the concerns of professionals and artists was explored.
