The synopsis of this film, a co-production between Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, is as follows:
It takes place at the dawn of World War I. It is a powerful story of sexual and intellectual discovery based on real events from the turbulent relationship between the young psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley). To this trio is added Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a libertine patient determined to push all boundaries. This exploration of sensuality, ambition and deception reaches its climax when Jung, Freud and Sabina reunite before finally parting ways and changing the direction of modern thought.
