It was said not but, finally, there will be a second part in the form of a sequel or prequel to the unexpected success of "District 9".
The main protagonist of the film, actor Sharlto Copley, has been the one who has confessed in a recent interview:
“Neil loves her and I love her. Neil is making another movie first. So I think if everything goes according to plan we will do the second movie in about two years. That story can take very different paths. There is a whole universe. I'm sure many writers say that, but we actually have a great universe. All of this started shooting in 2005 and before shooting the movie we shot 'Alive in Joburg' and two other shorts as part of Neil's creative process. The next two movies had my character, Wikus, although neither of them had that name. Those two parts were part of the evolution of that story and where it was going and all that. There are a million paths to focus on. Neil is currently very interested in the prequels, and has commented on this on several occasions. We shouldn't do the typical Hollywood sequel where we'd only have 100 aliens fighting humans. "
