It seems that the Red Epic camera will be the most used for 3D film shoots. The first movie that is using it is the new version of Spiderman.
Thus, John Schwartzman, cinematographer of "Spiderman 3D" comments:
“Today we have shot in 3D with four Epics mounted on two 3ality TS-5 rigs, we have done 22 shots, including some high speed ones and the images are impressive […] For the first time in digital cinema, a small size does not mean a loss of resolution, in fact there is no higher resolution camera than this except the IMAX ones, but the Epic weighs only 5 pounds (2,3 kg) with an Ultra Prime lens on; Suddenly the 3D is not a 100 pound beast ”.
The features of the Red Epic camera are:
- 5K resolution (5120 x 2700, the equivalent of 13,8 Megapixels).
- Dynamic range of 13,5 stops (aperture points) which would easily allow HDR video to be made.
- Variable ISO sensitivity from 200 to 12800.
- Variable speed up to 120 fps in 5K and 225 fps in 2K.
- Synchronization technology with another camera to shoot in 3D.
