Molins de Rei 2014: Criticism of “Exists” by Eduardo Sánchez

Exists

15 years after the great boom of his debut with Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez returns to found footage with "Exists", a film that we have seen in the Molins de Rei Horror Film Festival.

This time the film is a long way from "The Blair Witch" ("The Blair Witch Project"), a film with which the fashion of the found footage, a style that for years has dominated genre film festivals.

This time Eduardo Sánchez approaches the myth of Bigfoot and does it with a found footage tape, how could it be otherwise in this matter.

A group of five young people are preparing to spend a few days in a cabin lost in the forest, but on the way they run over something that they cannot guess to recognize. When they are installed and while they are recording videos with the multiple cameras that one of them has taken to this vacation, what seems to be a Bigfoot begins to attack them.

The first drawback, as always in this type of film, is the be a slave to the justification of each of the planes of the film. Entering pure and simple found footage, as the director does in "Exists", without giving it up at any point in the footage is very risky and this time Eduardo Sánchez does not work at all as well as in "La Blair Witch ».

On that occasion each shot was justified by the nature of the film itself, some guys who are filming a documentary about what ends up attacking them. In this case it is difficult to understand why each of the cameras, which are not few, continue to record at all times.

But his style is not the only problem with the film, the script is very simple, quite wrong and excessively predictable, and the story did not allow for an hour and a half of shaking cameras.

Rating: 2 / 10
