Keys to understanding upcoming Marvel movies

Marvel MCU

Every time they are more movies about Marvel that have a release date. So far we have a total of 12 feature films on the grill (not counting series) that have a lot to tell us about macro cinematographic universe that Marvel Studios is shaping intelligently and gradually.

El background that have left all the films already released, and whose chronological order you can follow in this link, It is huge, and due to the multiplicity of rumors and hypotheses that arise, the media constantly publish news related to what we call the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).

In this article you will find a list with the main keys of all the films that are programmed until 2019 so that you organize your ideas and update yourself in this already complex network of interconnected stories. Although some of them are not adhered to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they are produced by companies other than Marvel Studios (20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures).

X-Men: Apocalypse (20th Century Fox)

On May 20, a new X-Men film directed by Bryan Singer will be released, set ten years after the events of 'Days of Future Past'. In it the main villain will be apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) who will awaken and accumulate the powers of other mutants to become an immortal and invincible being. In addition, he will recruit a team of mutants called The Horsemen of the Apocalypse to destroy humanity and create a new order in which he is the highest authority.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Professor X (James McAvoy), as we saw in the official trailer, they will train in the Danger Chamber a group of mutants like Jean Gray (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) or Mercury (Evan Peters) to stop Apocalypse and save the world.

Release date in Spain: May 20, 2016.

Gambit (20th Century Fox)

Gambit is one of the most incredible X-Men for his enormous charisma and his powers, which allow him to charge inanimate objects with energy to give them explosive power. About his film adaptation we know that the character will be played by Channing Tatum, one of the fashionable actors, and who has given us some clues about the feature film.

Apparently the film will focus on the origins of the character, although it will be done in an unconventional way. Also the essence and aesthetics of the character will be very different from what we saw in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', where the mutant starred in a very good scene in a New Orleans bar against Logan. Although that time it was not played by Channing.

I think this Doug Liman-directed film could have enough potential to make a solo character saga, just like Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) was done.

Doctor Strange (Marvel Studios)

Scott Derrickson showed us a while ago the trailer for this movie in which Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be the main character. Little by little, endless images from the filming set that made us speculate a lot about the character's rationale.

According to the official synopsis, Stephen Strange will suffer a terrible accident that will force him to abandon his job as a neurosurgeon, although he will later arrive at the Temple of the Elder (Tilda Swinton), where he will learn a lot about the hidden world of magical dimensions. Stephen will develop powers and abilities that allow him to fight against really powerful villains.

Unlike the previous two, this film is part of the MCU, so it is very likely that we will see Doctor Strange in future films with the Avengers.

The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Mordo), Rachel McAdams (undisclosed role) and Mads Mikkelsen, who looks set to play Dr. Anthony Druid (the main villain).

Release date in the USA: November 4, 2016.

Wolverine 3 (20th Century Fox)

James Mangold presents this new installment starring Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) whose filming will begin during the summer of 2016. Although practically nothing is known about the synopsis yet, we know that Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) will repeat in this film in which we will surely fire Hugh Jackman as an interpreter, although it is likely that we will see him for the penultimate time in 'X-Men: Apocalypse', just as we could check in the trailer when its unmistakable adamantium claws appeared.

Although this film will not be part of the MCU, the Russo brothers have made public in an interview in Collider that they would love to see it Wolverine appeared in one of the most ambitious projects of Marvel Studios: 'The Avengers: Infinity War'. If they got Spider-Man inserted into the cinematic universe who knows if after negotiating with Fox they will also get it with Wolverine ...

In either case, and according to rumors, the feature film will be based on the graphic novel called "Old Man Logan", where we will see an elderly Wolverine, retired from the world of superheroes, and in a dystopian future.

Wolverine 3

Release date in the USA: March 3, 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Marvel Studios)

James Gunn returns as director of this second part that is currently in the filming phase and in which we will be able to see again Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saladana as Gamora and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, but also Groot (Vin Diesel will no longer play him) and Rocket Raccoon, whose voice will be re-voiced by Bradley Cooper.

The first part of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was an important turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not only because of the number of new characters that were introduced, but also because of the connection that the story has with the Avengers, especially as regards the Infinity Gems.

Let us remember that the 6 Infinity Gems gathered in the Gauntlet confer unlimited power on their wearer, hence they are so sought after throughout the Universe (by Thanos for example).

To date we know the Ether, or the Gem of Reality, whose current bearer is The Collector (Benicio del Toro) and appeared in 'Thor: A Dark World'. The Gem allows everyone who owns it to make their all wishes come true. We also have evidence of Tesseract, or Gem of the Space, that allows the user to exist in any place and to move objects by the universe. He appeared in almost the entire first Phase of the MCU and was the one who brought Loki to Earth. The Orb, found in Modag by Peter Quill in the first part of 'Guardians of the Galaxy', inside which we find the gem of Power, which allows its bearer the ability to communicate with all the power there and to be, and duplicate any metahuman ability to become invincible. And finally, in the UCM there has also been talk of the Mind Stone, which appears on the forehead of The Vision in 'The Avengers: The Age of Ultron' and 'Captain America: Civil War' and that it comes from the Chitauri Scepter, a magical artifact that Loki carried. This Gem also gave life to Ultron, the main villain of the second part of the team.

It is also believed that Spider-Man (Tom Holland) will appear in this sequel to 'Guardians of the Galaxy' having seen John Watts, director of the next spin-off of the arachnid hero, on the set with James Gunn, who for more inri has reported that Holland's Spider-Man will be the best to date!

Spider-Man: Homecoming (Marvel Studios - Sony Pictures)

Some time ago Sony published that the title of the new reboot Spider-Man (played Tom Holland) would be 'Homecoming', a name that refers to the title of number 252 of “The Amazing Spider-Man”.

Although this film is produced by Sony the truth is that will be part of the UCM thanks to the complex world of conventions. It is speculated that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) will make a cameo after the events of 'Civil War'. In the comic Iron Man was his mentor, a fact that reinforces the possibility that both characters intersect in the reboot. Who knows if any more will appear, like Captain America (Chris Evans) or Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

It is curious that the name of this new film, directed by John Watts, appeared in 'Captain America: Civil War' when Baron Zemo obediently wanted to reactivate the Winter Soldier to help him fulfill his evil plans. One of the trigger words was "Homecoming". What will all this have to do with it? Is it the result of chance? I do not think so.

On the other hand, it is believed that in this movie the villains would be Norman Osborn and the Vulture. For Osborn, Michael Keaton has been considered.

Spider-Man Homecoming

Release date in the USA: July 7, 2017.

Thor: Ragnarok (Marvel Studios)

This will be the third Thor-centric installment, directed by Taika Waititi, in which Hulk, who does not have any film that speaks only of his origins, will have an important leading role. Remember that both characters did not appear in 'Civil War', perhaps they give us some explanation about it in 'Ragnarok'.

Another novelty is that a new female character will appear, Valkyrie, a deity inspired by Norse mythology who was an ally of Doctor Strange in the comic. Who knows if there will be some kind of connection to the character-centric movie.

As if that were not enough, we know that an important female figure will play a dangerous villain, all the rumors seem to point to the same theory: Cate Blanchett will play Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death.

Many fans seem to also associate this important character in the Thor saga with Thanos, the main villain who will appear in 'Avengers: Infinity War'. Recall that in the comics the also called Crazy Titan fell madly in love with Death, a character for whom he collects the Infinity Gems. In the absence of this character, it is believed that Hela could be Thanos's love interest, which would make her role crucial in the future of the MCU. Yet it is also speculated that Surtur could also appear. What is known for sure is that some event in this film will lead directly to Infinity War.

Black Panther (Marvel Studios)

After the incursion of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in 'Captain America: Civil War' director Ryan Coogler opts for a film focused on the character, T'Challa.

Let us remember that in one of the post-credits scenes from 'Civil War' The character appeared introducing Wakanda, where the laboratory where Bucky, the Winter Soldier, is frozen is located. Perhaps they will return to this plot to talk about the future of this character who is being persecuted by the law for a false crime spun by Baron Zemo.

Also, it is possible that Dora Milage, T'Challa's bodyguards in the comics, recruited from indigenous tribes of Wakanda. A member of the team appeared in a scene from 'Civil War' when Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) was chasing Black Panther.

Who will be the villain in this movie? Monkey Man? White Wolf? Erik Killmonger? We will have to wait a while to find out.

The Avengers: Infinity War. Part 1 (Marvel Studios)

This macro film divided into two parts, directed by the Russo brothers, will undoubtedly be one of the most relevant of the UCM by the amount of characters that will appear involved in it. Although the directors are thinking of changing their names to distinguish them, we know that there will be a beastly encounter between all the characters that have appeared (and that will appear) in the UCM, characters that must meet to save humanity from Thanos and his attempt to get them. 6 Infinity Gems.

Thanos has been featured since Phase 1 of the cinematic framework, but we haven't seen him in action yet. We saw him in the post-credits scene of 'The Avengers', where from his throne he listens to The Other, who informs him of the dangerousness of the superhero team and its indomitable spirit, and in another of the post-credits scenes of' Los Avengers: The Age of Ultron 'where he is shown wearing the Gauntlet still without Gems and where it says: "Finally, I'll do it myself", as intelligent robot Ultron was defeated in Sokovia by the team of the Mightiest Heroes on Earth.

Of something I am very sure, for Thanos the Avengers are a real hindrance ... Will The Avengers be able to stop the Mad Titan's mission?

Recently Anthony and Joe Russo have stated that they will begin filming both parts of 'Ininity War' in parallel from November 2016. Likewise, they have publicly commented that the relationship between The Scarlet Witch and Vision, which we already began to feel in 'Civil War', will be exploited much more now. Remember that in the comics both characters had a long and complex romance. The directors have also shared in an interview that we still do not know anything about the true power of our character masters, we have only scratched the surface above ...

Avengers Infinity War Thanos

Release date in the USA of the First Part: May 4, 2018.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (Marvel Studios)

Marvel confirmed that there will be a movie in which Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) they would be together again, as happened in 'Ant-Man', with which Phase 3 of the UCM ended.

The 'Lost' actress has reiterated on several occasions that she will be delighted to don that costume of the superheroine who appeared in the post-credits scene of 'Ant-Man'.

Peyton reed It seems that he will be the director of this sequel again, at the moment it is not confirmed, but the negotiations with Marvel are on the right track.

To date nothing else is known, nor if Michael Douglas will return to play Hank Pym (the first Ant-Man), nor who will be the villain, nor how the film could connect with all the extensive background.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Release date in the USA: July 6, 2018.

Captain Marvel (Marvel Studios)

About this future feature film, not much is known either, beyond the fact that rumors point to Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson as favorites to embody this characteristic and interesting female character. Recently the director of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, announced that the name of the director and some members of the cast will be released in late summer, a time that could coincide with Comic-Con in San Diego.

There are still three years left for the premiere and with them infinite news more.

Captain Marvel movie

Release date in the USA: March 8, 2019.

The Avengers: Infinity War. Part 2 (Marvel Studios)

What we know about the second part of 'Infinity War' is practically the same as the first. At the moment, both parts must be conceived as a whole, as the same event in which more than 60 characters will participate, including Captain America. The presence of this superheroine that we have talked about in the previous section is more than confirmed by the directors themselves, who consider her "A completely different character".

Another recent and novel fact about the film is in relation to the set design: In Infinity War landscapes will not be limited to EarthWe will go to remote places in space, to exotic planets where the rules of the game will not be the same. The idea aims to give the whole story another type of realism to which we are used to seeing, although in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' we already enter this type of galactic scenery. According to rumors, this second part will include a great final battle in space against Thanos.
