Interview with French actress Juliette Binoche

The great Gallic artist, one of the best French actresses in current European cinemagranted an exclusive interview with the newspaper Clarín, because of Paris, a film that will hit Argentine theaters in the coming weeks.

Interviewed by Diego Papic, Binight he did a little while in the middle of a full tour with the dance company that he integrates, to talk about his career, his reluctance to Hollywood cinema, the city that gives the film its name, the role that he had to incarnate, and of, of course, Paris, the play directed by Cédric Klapisch.

How did you choose this project?
The truth is that I have known the director for a long time, he is a friend of Santiago Amigorena. We met a couple of times the year before and he asked me if I would be interested in working with him, I said yes and he wrote the script for me, somehow.
Because in general you are very selective ...
It has to be a project that you want to say yes to without thinking. If my first feeling is yes, then I start to think that this role belongs to me somehow.
How is this role of Elise?
When you play a character, you don't want to explain it. If you interpret it, it is because you cannot put words to it. If not, you would be the writer, not the actor, do you understand me? The interesting thing is in his relationship with his brother, who is somehow a ray of light. Elise does not think about a hard life or great responsibilities, at the end of the film she has her entire life in her hands, and she is aware of that - she analyzes -. From the beginning you can see the harshness of his life, the children, the people who move around the city in this way and at the end, by being with his brother, he realizes many things. I love the combination of these two characters.
Paris is very present. What does the city represent for you?
The idea I had of Paris when I was a teenager was that it was the city of art. I love art, so every time I came to Paris, I loved going to see museums, to the cinema, to the theater. I was always very thirsty for this kind of life and expression. Later, when you live in the city it is difficult, especially if you don't have a lot of money.
Does it bother you to have to explain it all the time?
The truth is. I don't like doing interviews on interviews I've already done. A lot of interviews just say things like 'I read you said this…' And well, I think I have the right to renew myself and change my mind and stuff. I don't like to get stuck with an idea of ​​how people think I am or what I think. I'm sick of this, and that's probably why I did a comedy in Hollywood, so they can't say I reject it ”(laughs).
You mean "Dani, a lucky guy" ...
Yes, there was something about the script that I liked. I had seen the first Peter Hedges movie (April Fragments) and I really liked it. It was a low-budget movie, but it had comedy, it had… I don't know, it got to me, so I thought I could work with it. And I was right, he's a real director, he's not exactly Hollywood. It is, but it has its own style, its own way of doing it.
