Interview with Alanis Morissette

Alaniss

Before his presentation on Agentina and in the middle of his South American tour, Alanis Morissette spoke with the Argentine newspaper Clarín in an extensive and very interesting interview. He talked about his latest studio album, Flavors of Entanglement, the tour, his personal life, his relationship with drugs and caring for the environment.

Next, we reproduce a part of the interview, with the most relevant questions.

What things did you lose in these years of so much exposure?
The possibility of being with my people. I was raised with a great sense of belonging to a community. Therefore, having been on tour for so long, as an isolated one, has been a great challenge for me. And being recognized made it impossible for me to sit on a bench in the plaza to observe what was going on around me, something that I love. But I do not regret.

Do you go into recording with an idea formed of how you want the material to sound?
No. I write the song and the images, with which I let the chemistry be generated between me and the producer. I prefer not to work with previous ideas, so that the result surprises me even more. Before making a CD I have to live my life, experience whatever it takes, and then transform it into songs. Once there, the music and the lyrics come out at the same time, very quickly.

Don't you even dive into other music or rhythms, looking for new sounds?
It's just that I don't try to find a certain sound. In any case, I listen to a lot of interpreters and songwriters from the '00s and today, who share their own stories on their songs. But, at the moment of creating, I make a cut and I focus on my own.

Do you think that art provides solutions?
I have no great idea that art can change anything in the world. Music can help someone in their search for a cure for what is happening on the planet. But neither art nor a benefit concert will produce change unless those who are involved with it are truly committed.
