Film Masters: David Cronenberg (90s)

David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg has been adapting his cinema to the times throughout his career, so in the 90s he gradually put aside his most gore style without ever fleeing from his recurring theme, the body horror.

In 1991, the Canadian filmmaker shoots «Naked lunch«, Adaptation of the homonymous novel by Williams S. Burroughs. Although in reality Cronenberg not only takes into account Burroughs's book, but also other of his writings and moments from the author's real life. Critics were divided, but the film swept the Genie Awards, Canadian academy awards, where it won seven awards, including best film and best director.

Two years after "Naked Lunch" Cronenberg shoots a film with a very different theme from what his fans were used to. The director leaves fantasy and horror cinema for once to carry out a drama set in China in the 60s, «M.Butterfly». This adaptation of David Henry Hwang's theatrical work is a sign that the director also dominated other genres.

In 1996 the filmmaker adapted the novel by JG Ballard «Crash«, Taking it to the big screen with the same title. The film was controversial for dealing with characters who feel a great sexual arousal from car accidents. "Crash" won the Special Jury Prize at a Cannes Film Festival, where it was also nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Crash

The filmmaker returned to science fiction in 1999 with his film «eXistenZ«, Another cult film in the director's filmography cataloged in the cyberpunk subgenre. The film won the Outstanding Artistic Contribution Award at the Berlinale that same year.
