It was already known that since 2002 suffered from a degenerative disease that caused him to lose his memory and deteriorate his vital functions, which forced him to withdraw from public life.
His family announced the loss in a statement of which we highlight the following:

(…) He was a charming husband, a kind and devoted father and a gracious grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He fulfilled these significantly more important roles with enormous faith, courage and dignity. "
