BAFICI: A L'Ouest de Pluton, by Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault

pluto1

Filmed digitally, this Canadian debut feature, spoken in French, places us in those films with many little storiess, which develop in parallel, until they converge at a given moment, which is the breaking point and the trigger for the conflict.

To L'Ouest de Pluto presents a group of young people who share a school and, for better or worse, the same course. The first half hour is a kind of casting where the «concerns»Of each one, from the unpopular, who together signs with some distant cause, to the secret lover, passing through the group of skaters, always with their boards under their arms (or feet); the cruel Popular; The musicians and cute. In this sense, the film resorts to stereotypes, but it does so with a credible tone, without highlighting goodness or badness, and leaving a wide range of grays on the surface.

The work of this debutante couple draws an acute adolescent portrait, without any kind of moral discourses. About, many have remarked the similarities with the work of Gus Van Sant, and although these similarities exist, in To L'Ouest de Pluto the tragedy is absent, and the debate that opens Elephant o Paranoid Park I don't think this film causes it. Or in any case, the invitation to think about the future and the abandonment suffered by a large part of the new generations, is much warmer.

Returning to the story, everything that happens is told in one long night, after the party organized at the house of Émilie (the unpopular) gets completely out of control and her companions steal a precious family portrait. From that moment on, the older brother of Emilia he will look for those responsible and will go out together with his sister to try to recover the painting.

Throughout the 95 minutes that the tape lasts, parents seem to be completely unaware of the world in which their children are; and when they peek out, the roles seem to be reversed, and the teens seem like adults and adults, inexperienced teens (the conversation in the hospital is the biggest evidence at this point).

To L'Ouest de Pluto It exudes a certain sensitivity, an elemental humor, but fun, and the whole cast, within the role they had to play, do not clash in the least.

In the cast are Alexis Drolet, David Bouchard and Yoann Linteau. El script and production were carried out by the same duo he directed, Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault.
