In previous articles I have already mentioned the new project of garciadiego, Ripstein's wife, and scriptwriter (flawless) of all his previous films. The latter being, a script that does not find a budget, specifying, in relation to others of smaller size and not so high poetic flight, very little money.
Now, and on the subject of this news, I would like to comment on the film that I saw last night, directed by Arturo Ripstein, based on the novel by José Donoso, and the simplicity and deep emotional depth that characterizes his entire filmography. The movie in question is «The Place without Limits«. And it tells the story of Pancho and La Manuela. The film is from 1977, and its protagonists are Manuela, a transvestite homosexual, whose best job is dancing flamenco. He lives with his daughter (a long, long story), whom they call the Japanese, in a "house for young ladies." Together with these two characters, live the different women who offer themselves for a few pesos to the visitors of the town. Manuela has a past history of deceptions, sorrows, pains and joys, as well as strange opportunities provided by destiny. And she is not the only one with a history. In the town, the Mayor plans to buy all possible properties, in order to empty the town of inhabitants, and thus get rid of the weight of time. But his former protégé, Pancho, who betrayed him in a blind, albeit deluded, confidence, returns to town, as several times before, to revolutionize morality, and conclude with his pending promises.
An ending that tears, although it satisfies in the calm that from the beginning is essential. It is only at the end that the characters manage to rest. And one, as a spectator, too.
I have already mentioned this incredible Mexican director, along with his impeccable woman-screenwriter, when referring to the best of his films, «Deep Crimson«. Well this, being one of the first of the director in his long career, has the right elements of a beginning that is immense in the nearest future. Recommended, highly recommended, for the spirit, reason, pain, and the soul's own delight.
