Sitges 2014: Review of "Goodnight Mommy" by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz

Goodnight mommy

"Goodnight Mommy" is possibly one of the best films of the 47th edition of the Sitges Festival.

The film, produced by the famous Ulrich Seidl and directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, it has been a pleasant surprise in this new edition of the Catalan contest.

«Goodnight mommy»Tells the story of two twin brothers awaiting the arrival of their mother who has undergone cosmetic surgery. When she returns home cold and distant, the two boys will begin to doubt if that is really their mother.

A simmering film that seems to owe a lot to another Austrian film, «F»Of Michael Haneke, not so much for his argument, but also, if not in his formal treatment.

The coldness of the spaces, as well as the brief dialogues, are what maintains the tension from the first part of the film, where not much seems to be happening, but where tragedy is actually brewing.

It is true that the final twist, we know from many other stories, but that does not detract from the great direction of Severin Fiala y Veronika franz.

Rating: 8 / 10
