Morocco will seek its first Oscar nomination for best film in a foreign language with the film 'Aida' by Driss Mrini.
The North African country has been shortlisted for the Hollywood Academy Award formerly known as best foreign film ten times before this year and has only managed to pass the first cut once.
In 2011 Morocco presented the preselection 'Omar Killed Me' ('Omar m'a nuts') by Roschdy Zem, which passed the first cut that leaves the candidates in nine but finally did not sneak into the final five. This is the best participation the country has had to date, something that he would like to change this year thanks to 'Aida'.
'Aida' is the second film by Driss Mrini after 'Larbi ou le destin d'un grand footballeur' and the debut of Abdelilah Hamdouchi as screenwriter.
The movie tells the story of Aida Cohen, a Paris-based music teacher who battles a tumor. Aida is convinced that they are her last and that she will die due to the disease so she decides to return to her native Morocco to reconnect with her roots and remember her forgotten childhood.
