In search of more entertainment (and why not, audience), the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts decided a few weeks ago that the 82nd Academy Awards will have 10 nominees for best picture, twice as many nominations as there were previously in that category.
Thus returning to the old days, where there were 10 candidate films, sid ganis, President of the Academy I declare that «The Academy returns to one of its most ancient roots, when a large number of films competed for the best award of the year. The goal will be the same, the best film, but the race to the finish line will be 10, not 5, great films of 2009 ».
The competitors who will fight for the statuette will be known on February 2 of next year, and the award ceremony will be held at the luxurious Kodak Theater in Hollywood, on March 7, 2010.
The idea came up based on the criticism generated by the last editions of the Oscars, which pointed out that it was an injustice that films like The Dark Knight or Wally were not among the candidates for best film. About, win recognized that "Having 10 nominees for Best Picture will allow the Academy to recognize and include some of the most fantastic productions of the year that regularly fall into other categories but had to be eliminated from the competition for the highest award."
The rest of the categories will remain at 5 candidates, but it would not be surprising if this changes later on. The Academy, in its first years of awards, had 10 films nominated for best film (1920-1930) and in 1934 and 1935 there were 12 the works that competed for the highest golden award.
