U2 wants a Europe "merciful to refugees"

U2

U2 advocated for a merciful Europe towards refugees after the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday, while also showing solidarity with France, at a concert in Belfast. The charismatic singer of the band, Bono, launched numerous messages in tribute to Paris and the victims of the attack and also in memory of the refugees who try to reach European territory fleeing conflicts such as Syria.

During the performance in the Northern Irish capital, U2 -which canceled a planned performance in Paris due to the massacre- screened images of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe with messages such as "Stronger than fear" and "Long live France", as well as of bombed Syrian cities and refugees walking on train tracks. Bono asked the attendees if they wanted a Europe "with its heart open or with its borders closed to mercy.", and, in his characteristic evangelizing tone, he added: "We refuse to hate because love will work better."

U2 played "City of Blinding Lights" in tribute to Paris and its anti-war classic "Bloody Sunday" and Bono referred to the attitude towards adversity of former South African leader Nelson Mandela, whom he quoted as saying: "It always seems impossible until happens". After this concert in Belfast -the first of the Dublin band since 1997-, U2 will once again present its "Innocence + Experience Tour 2015" in this city, to take it next week to the capital of Ireland, where the group was formed in 1976.

Let us remember that last September, U2 has decided to use images from the '#UErfanos' campaigns of the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) and Amnesty International's '#OpentoSyria', reflecting the refugee crisis, during their European tour concerts.
