In a difficult time for most women, this film is presented that somehow wants to show us how housewives lived in the fifties and sixties. The protagonist Evelyn ryan (Julianne Moore) has to face tough times with her large family of ten children and a drunken husband (Woody Harrelson) to move them forward. And he does it in the way he is best given "with the gift of words." At this time, housewives entered TV contests to win cash, and Evelyn uses her gift to take advantage of it.

The film is based on a novel written by Evelyn's daughter Terry Ryan by the name of "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" so that her great mother, as she calls her, would be remembered. It was published in 2001 although Evelyn Ryan died at the age of 85 in 1998. And the same author affirms after the film adaptation that "I couldn't imagine a better person to play my mother, and neither could my brothers and sisters."
