Joost van Ginkel's choral film 'The Paradise Suite' is chosen by the Netherlands for the Oscar preselection for best film in a foreign language.
With this film The Netherlands will seek its eighth candidacy for the Hollywood Academy Award formerly known as Best Foreign Film and thus opt for his fourth statuette.
And is that the Netherlands has won the award up to three times, in 1987 he won his first statuette for best film in a foreign language for the film by Fons Rademakers 'The Assault' ('The attack'), in 1996 he repeated the award with 'Antonia's Line' ('Antonia') by Marleen Gorris, The last time he won this award was in 1998 when Mike van Diem won it for 'Character' ('Karakter').
In recent years the Netherlands has made the first cut up to three times without finally getting the nomination, 'The Black Book' ('Zwartboek') by Paul Verhoeven in 2007, 'Winter in Wartime' ('Oologswinter') by Martin Koolhoven in 2010 and 'Lucia de B.' by Paula van der Oest at the last edition of the Hollywood Academy Awards.
'The Paradise Suite' is about a look at europe today through six different characters that they are, and that they move between the passion, the pain and the problems.
