Would the BBC compete directly with iTunes?

with the BBC

The world famous British chain with the BBC has confirmed its intentions to set up an online service from which songs can be listened to and downloaded from the immense music archive it possesses.

The site would also allow to see / hear material obtained from the exclusive internal radio or television sessions, while it would charge if the visitor wanted to obtain it.
In addition, the managers have ruled out that it could become a direct competition to the service offered iTunes, since they would only offer versions of songs recorded in the with the BBC and not studio versions.

The launch of this service could be giving in the next january and it is known that they have already been talking with major labels such as EMI, to dispose of the corporation's files.
"We are looking at establishing a direct-to-listener system where the listener can access the vast BBC archives. So far, nothing is confirmed”, Declared a spokesman of the English chain.
