Must-see movies

the others

The cinema has a history of more than 120 years and an inexhaustible production. Therefore, defining a list of movies to see seems at first a difficult task.

What criteria to follow to make a list of movies to see? By history, by quality or by its cultural impact. Either for their results at the box office and with the public, for the amount of prizes they have obtained. For none of the above, because it has been recommended to us or because we feel like it.

After all, the movie experience is always subjective. So a film that for some may be a work of art, for others it may be a calamity.

In any case, below, we see a proposal of movie titles that must be seen. Some are obvious and widely accepted selections. In other cases it is subject to the subjectivity of the reader.

Tsystem. (A live life) by Peter Weir (1998)

Directed by Peter Weir, Australian filmmaker with other titles on many must-see movie listings. Some of them are Dead poets society (1989) Fearless (1993) o Master and commander: the other side of the world (2003)

Starring Jim Carrey, a critical view on television and the way audiences behave Before this.

The Exorcist, by William Friedkin (1973)

Based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, is one of the most influential horror films in film history. With a whole subculture around it, and with several related products (movies and TV series), thanks to an argument that seems inexhaustible.

In 2000 the tape was re-released, causing the same terrifying impact on audiences, despite the longevity of its special effects.

exorcist

The other, by Alejandro Amenábar (2001)

Spanish-made film, although shot entirely in English. It is, next to Borrowed time by Imanuel Uribe (1994) and Quick 211 by Daniel Monzón (2010), (another couple of films that must be seen), the film with the most Goya awards to its name, with a total of 8.

Starring Nicole Kidman, with Tom Cruise among her producers. One of the most important box office successes in the history of Spanish cinema. It turned a budget of 17.000.000 US $ into more than 210 million dollars of collection.

Karate Kidby John G. Avildsen (1984)

There is no teenager from the 80s who has reached adulthood without having seen this movie. Starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, and Elizabeth Shue. John G. Avildsen, Oscar-winning director for Rocky (another must-see movie), he was hired to take over this tale of martial arts and youth romance.

In 2010 Will Smith produced a remake starring his son Jaden Smith alongside Jackie Chan and Tajari P. Henson.. Remarkable success at the box office, albeit a sacrilege for most fans of the original film.

The tongue of butterflies, by José Luis Cuerda (1999)

Cinema is one of the most used media for review and expose human conflicts. Even the issues that are uncomfortable are also addressed.

The friendship and learning relationship between a veteran school teacher and one of his students, serves as an excuse to portray the environment that was lived in Galicia during the months prior to the Spanish Civil War.

The snake's embrace, by Ciro Guerra (2015)

Colombian manufacturing production, with the participation of Venezuela and Argentina. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

A review of the controversial figure of the Capuchin monks in Amazonian lands, within the rubber rush. All told in a slow and even poetic way, where the images assume all the weight of the dramatic development.

Pulp Fictionby Quentin Tarantino (1994)

Putting together any list of must-see movies and leaving out this Quentin Tarantino work is inconceivable. Starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth and a long etcetera.

Stands out for show the general public the visual style of its director (Some have dubbed it the cult of blood). Also for its script, written under the structure of the "dog that bites its tail." A whole cult movie.

2001: A Space Odysseyby Stanley Kubrick (1968)

2001

There is hardly any movie set in outer space that does not have references to this sci-fi classic.

Based on The Sentinel, novel written by Arthur C. Clarke. In addition to exploring the confines of the universe, Kubrick indulges in the origin of the universe. Similar confines also explored by Christopher Nolan in Interstellar (2014), although without obtaining the same results.

And Your Mother Too, by Alfonso Cuarón (2001)

It can explore the dramas of adolescence and also analyze the contemporary history of a nation in the same film? The answer is yes and it is called Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Starring Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, the modern faces of Mexican cinema, along with the Spanish Maribel Verdú. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who together with Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu, form the trio of directors emblematic of the Nuevo Cine Azteca.

Birdman or the unexpected virtue of ignorance, by Alejandro González Iñárritu (2014)

The merits of this tape are many. One of the most celebrated and original works of the last decade. Michael Keaton, who achieved world star status after starring in Batman by Tim Burton (1989), he seems to parody himself in this story halfway between drama, fantasy and comedy. Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Any Ryan, Zach Galifianakis and Naomi Watts round out a really robust cast.

(Bonus track) The Justice Leagueby Zack Snyder (2017)

For better or for worse, it is one of the most talked about films in the last year. What for part of the public should be (and is) the zenith of superhero films, for others it is a film that leaves much to be desired.

But you have to see it. At worst, it is a funny tape that thanks to the musical score composed by Danny Elfman, takes the trouble to honor other films of the genre.
