In the 90s Lars Von Trier He dedicated himself to very diverse projects, on the one hand in the cinema and on the other on television.
Before starting with new ideas, the filmmaker finished his European trilogy in 1991, which he started in 1984 with "The Element of Crime" and continued in 1987 with "Epidemic". The last installment of this triptych was called «Europa«, A film that won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and the awards for best film and best photography at the Sitges Film Festival.
In 1994 he shot for television the miniseries «The Riget»Of four chapters with director Morten Arnfred. A mixture of fantasy, horror and black comedy, the series is set in a strange hospital called "The Kingdom" located next to a swamp.
The following year, together with Thomas Vinterberg, he created the avant-garde cinematographic movement dogma 95, which is based on the following ten rules that both agreed:
- Filming has to take place in natural places. You cannot decorate or create a "set". If an article or object is necessary for the development of the story, a location should be found where the necessary objects are.
- Sound cannot be mixed separately from the images or vice versa (music should not be used, unless it is recorded in the same place where the scene is being shot).
- Camera in hand will be shot. Any movement or immobility due to the hand is allowed. (The film must not take place where the camera is, the shooting must take place where the film takes place.)
- The film has to be in color. Special or artificial light is not allowed (If the light is not enough to shoot a certain scene, it must be eliminated or, strictly speaking, a simple focus can be plugged into the camera).
- Optical effects and filters are prohibited.
- The film cannot have a superficial action or development (there can be no weapons nor can crimes occur in history).
- Temporal or spatial alignment is prohibited. (This is to verify that the movie takes place here and now).
- Genre films are not accepted.
- The format of the film must be 35 mm.
- The director must not appear in the credits.
