'Hacksaw Ridge', the story of the conscientious objector who became a hero

Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge is the new movie directed by Mel Gibson. I mentioned the other day that Clint Eastwood is among the most interesting directors on my wish list. Mel Gibson is also on this list. He has directed few films but they can all be considered very good, something very complicated in the world of directing.

But for the generations that come behind, he is a guy who has left the industry due to controversial statements. Some interviews in which he has said real atrocities have gone viral. This may be an explanation for why his name does not appear on the poster of this film and the following sentence does: «From the acclaimed director of Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ.

Hacksaw Ridge features the faces of Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn in its cast. It has a release date for November 4 in the United States. In our borders, it is not known.

He was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. He never fired a gun. He was criticized by his comrades, the army tried everything to kick him out, and he endured because he wanted to serve as a combat medic in the worst place on the planet.

Okinawa was a bloodbath. The highest death toll in the Pacific. And when no one else wanted to go in there, he went and saved 75 guys in one night: one at a time, under fire. And then he did it over and over again in places like the Philippines and Guam.

Most Medal of Honor recipients do something insanely brave in an instant. But he did it over and over again for months. He didn't really care about his own life. His message was that so many people were being killed, that he must do something to go against the current.
