Film Masters: Theo Angelopoulos (90s)

Theo Angelopous

In the 90s Theo Angelopoulos continued to be present in the main international festivals, although his films were much less awarded than in previous times.

In 1991 the Greek director shoots «The suspended gait of the stork«, a film that was present at the Cannes Festival. This is another of the author's masterpieces, although its poor distribution meant that it was forgotten. In 1995 Angelopoulos returned to the fray with another spectacular feature film, "The Gaze of Ulysses." Another road movie in the filmography of the Greek filmmaker, totally essential to see. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize ex aequo together with "Tierra y Libertad" at Cannes and the Felix Critics Award for Film of the Year.

That same year he also participated in an episode film with several directors. It is about "Lumière and company", a film in which forty prestigious directors got together to make each one a short film with the cinematograph used by the Lumière brothers. The filmmakers only had to meet three conditions in their work: not to exceed 52 seconds in their works, that they did not have more than three takes and not synchronize the sound. In the film we can find renowned directors such as David Lynch, Abbas Kiarostami, Wim Wenders or Michael Haneke.

With "Eternity and a Day" the director returned to conquer the Cannes Film Festival in 1998. On this occasion Angelopoulos rose up in the French city with the Palme d'Or for the best film and the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
