In recent dates, Disney announced a new version of "Mulan", to be released in theaters in 2018. As if it were a challenge, Sony has thought about the same thing. A new "Mulan" with that name or a different name, but with the same story.
In this kind of competition between production companies for a film with a similar plot, Sony wants to release before, and has already signed a director, which Disney has yet to do. The chosen name is Alex Graves.
We know Graves for some films such as "Encadenada", from 1997 and "The Crude Oasis", shot in 1995, but especially for his latest works on television, with "The West Wing of the White House", and especially for "Game of Thrones."
Among the reasons given in forums and social networks for criticize the choice of this director is the fact that he is white. It is unheard of, but it is what is happening.
Interestingly, two versions of the film seem to compete with each other.
On the one hand there is the Disney version and on the other the Sony version. Both studios were looking for Asian directors. Ang Lee was one of those tempted by Disney, although it seems that he has not finally accepted the offer.
It is not the first time that two film studios coincide in bringing to the big screen a remake of a blockbuster. What is surprising is that they are carried out in a parallel way, with similar projects, and even considering the same names for the direction and the realization.
As for the release dates, the clearest is that of Disney, which is keeping it for November 2, 2018. Sony is considering a live action version, for a more international audience, although no date has yet been announced.
