Criticism of Maradona, by Emir Kusturica

emir-kusturica

A director that, personally, I deeply admire, is Emir Kusturica. His films are always the representation of everything that is worth, plus the share of less fine humor (after seeing «Black Cat, White Cat«, I couldn't forget the fat lady pulling a nail out of a wood with her buttocks)

His latest film, a documentary made mainly in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is about Diego Armando Maradona. It intersperses archive images, with direct reports, and shots in various settings. We see Fidel in Cuba, we go to Sarajevo, then to Villa Fiorito, and we end up in the capital of the province.

For those who do not know this mythical character (who are few), we must admit that the documentary is good, and provides the basic information to meet Maradona. Now, for those who already know what it is about, for those who know their position on many things, for those who do, the documentary is nothing more than the sum of an audiovisual chaos, which reproduces basic information, but contributes nothing new.

The film was presented last year, 2008, at Cannes. It is pleasant as a journey to what has already been done, but there is no surprise far from it. I think the most pleasant thing is to see Emir Kusturica with Diego, between beers, laughs and anecdotal matches. Personally, I did not feel that the film said all that Emir usually says in his films, since it seemed more like a tourist tour of the most significant of the city of Buenos Aires, and then of Maradona, without saying much more.

Likewise, I recommend it for those who are not very immersed in what Maradona's life is, was and will be. It is not a masterpiece…
