Cervantes, to the rhythm of rap

Cervantes music

It has been said of Cervantes that he was one of the most important writers in history, that he laid the foundations of the modern novel, and that he has crossed all international froteras with Don Quixote. But there is a personal side. It was adventurer, womanizer, prone to getting you in different trouble of all kinds, both military and love affairs.

To get more information about the great writer to all audiences, at the Almagro festival they have thought of an excellent idea: a rap contest with the theme of Miguel de Cervantes, taking advantage, in addition, that the fourth centenary of his death will be celebrated, on April 22, 1616.

This project has two parts. On the one hand, in the celebration of the Almagro festival on July 14, and, in parallel, in the Guanajuato Mexican city, coinciding with a Cervantes festival that will take place in October. Originally, this idea was generated because Cervantes' prose fits very well with the octosyllable, because young people follow his work and because the themes that the Manchego writer dealt with can be perfectly integrated into current culture.

The rapper who wins either of the two finals will receive 2.000 euros as a prize, 1.500 euros the second and 100 the third. In the world of rap, the great classical writers have been used a lot. The rapper from Alicante, Nach, used for his song “Hoy converso con Miguel”, some well-known verses by Miguel Hernández.

About the themeAny aspirant who wants to participate can do so, as long as they use the Spanish language in their songs, and that the lyrics are focused on the life and work of Cervantes. El PAÍS, the SER network, the Casa Encendida in Madrid, WRadio and the Ciudad Real City Council participate in the contest. The videos submitted must be one minute long and can be sent to cervantesenrap@festivalamagro.com. The deadline for proposals ends on May 16.
