El Cannes Festival, one of the most important in the world, this year will celebrate its 60th anniversary with the aim of uniting «modernity and history, large firms and young shoots«. The list of films that will participate in the official selection, made up of 49 films, of which only four are Hispanic-American, has already been defined. The only Spanish representation in this edition is that of the director Jaime Rosales.

This year's reduced Hispanic presence, in contrast to the opulent 2006 edition, is led by Mexican director Carlos Reygadas, who will compete for the second time for the Palme d'Or, the competition's main award. His film «Stellet Licht» ('LumiÞre silencieuse'), international production shot in Dutch, language of the religious community Amish who lives in Mexico, was cited as a model by the show's artistic director, Thierry Frémaux, of the increasing difficulty of giving "nationality to a film."

Also in search of the Palme d'Or will be great authors such as Gus van Sant, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Emir Kusturica and Wong Kar-wai, who will open the contest on May 16.
