About adaptations

A couple of days ago I saw, in a comfortable armchair in a comfortable house, and on a kind big screen, the latest movie of Meirelles, who are "The blindness«, Adaptation of the work of Saramago,« Essay on blindness ».

For those who have not seen it, it is a film with very impressive images, at the moment, due to the harshness with which the events are narrated. An epidemic begins to affect all citizens of North America, leaving them completely blind. Seeking to maintain the safety of the uninfected, the government decides to place the newly blind in detention centers, where they must organize and manage themselves. One of the characters who is left blind is married to a woman who, in order to accompany him, pretends to be blind, and ends up confined in the same place.

As time progresses, the detention center becomes increasingly crowded, leading to countless violent complications, more deaths and competitions, as well as burnouts. Throughout the entire film she is the only one who can see, and therefore the only one who can help those who do not see, but also the only one who suffers the emotional scourges that the circumstance generates.

Personally, I admit that the film has been to my liking, and it has stressed me to the point of sinking a lot in the armchair where I was. But on the other hand, I cannot deny the fact that it is nothing more than a fairly literal adaptation of the novel. And this why? Because I considered, when I saw it, that the film did not take the risks of discipline. Cinema provides mechanisms and tools with which to be able to tell certain things in a much richer way, and completely different than what would be counted in a novel.

The written text gives a freedom to the imagination that is incomparable. Well, the cinema must also be able to capitalize on its own tools to achieve the same effect. Personally, I must say that I am tired of the adaptations little played, that bet on a literality that little enriches. Out of all this, the film is quite good, and the original novel is great, very great ...
