The film director Roman Polanski? will team up with British writer Robert Harris to bring the novel to the big screen Pompeii, in what could be the most expensive film made in Europe. This epic story, which will cost about 150 million euros to set up, recounts the tragic death of thousands of people by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD in the ancient Roman city. Filming will begin this summer in Alicante.

According to the Sunday Times, a Hollywood star, whose name has not been released, will play Marco Atilio Primo, the engineer who tries to alert the Romans to the approaching catastrophe. The 73-year-old French director of Polish origin has asked the writer to write the script in eight weeks. Harris has noted that he turned down two offers from Hollywood to buy the rights to the book when it was published in 2003, but decided to settle with Polanski. «I am going back to Paris this week to start writing a review and the shooting will start in the summer«,? stated the writer.

Meanwhile, Polanski himself declared that? «I've always been told why I didn't direct an epic movie about Romans or Greeks, but I always answered that that was not my field. When I read this book, I was completely seduced. It is also a thriller, so I thought that there I could do my bit«.
