For the first time in its history, Malta is presented to the preselection at Oscar de Best Foreign Language Film.

The tape chosen for this first date with the Academy Awards It was "Simshar" by Rebecca Cremona.

"Simsahr" is the debut of Rebecca cremona, who became directing in 2009 with the short film "Magdalene." Before, he had worked in films such as "Munich" by Steven Spielberg or "Ágora" by Alejandro Amenazar, as a video assistant.

The film tells the story of Theo, a 12-year-old boy from a traditional fishing village. The young man is pressured to continue his education so as not to end up in the world of fishing, but despite this he goes on his first fishing trip with his father, grandfather and an immigrant worker from Mali. On the trip they suffer a fire that causes the ship, the simmhar, sinks, leaving the crew stranded in open water. While on the ground, a doctor who works in the open center for immigrants is surprised that the Simshar does not give signals, while he attends to some African rafters, about whom Malta and Italy discuss bureaucratic issues of his arrival.
