Film Masters: Kim Ki-duk (Early and 90s)

Kim ki-duk

Kim Ki-duk is a prodigy of cinema not only in Asia but all over the world.

In the last decade he has established himself as one of the new masters of cinema, but from the beginning he began to demonstrate a supernatural talent for the seventh art. Kim Ki-duk started late in the world of cinema, because he had not stepped foot a cinema until he was thirty years old.

In his own words, two of the first films he saw, in Paris, marked him a lot, "The Silence of the Lambs" by Jonathan Demme and "Les Amants de Pont-Neuf" by Leos Carax.

In 1993 he entered several screenwriting competitions, winning the top prize from the South Korean National Script Institute for his work "A Painter and a Criminal Condemned to Death." A year later he was awarded third place in the competition organized by KOFIC with "Double Exposure", and the following year the KOFIC top prize for "Reckless crossing". None of these scripts were ever shot.

In 1996 he made his directing debut with the film "Crocodile" at only 36 years old, but what is even more surprising, only four years after having stepped on a movie theater for the first time.

The following year he made his next film «Wild Animals». While these first two Ki-duk films were good, with the third, "The Birdcage Inn" made a huge leap in quality.

Three good films offered by the South Korean director in the 90s, but the best of the filmmaker was yet to come.
